Top 10: Hopefully Scariest Movies of 2011

It's difficult to predict what movies will soar to the heights of popularity, and which films will sink like the rotten turd that they are. But accuracy aside, it's fun to take a look at the future and get excited by the cinematic offerings coming up. Let's hope these movies scare the crap out of us, and not because we're scared that a good horror movie will never be made again.

1. The Woman in Black

The trailer is one of the most subtly creepy things I've seen in awhile, which is saying something. The stage play (which is adapted from the same 1983 novel by Jane Goldman) has had a successful run for decades, leaving millions of people entertained and frightened out of their wits. Daniel Radcliffe has essentially learned how to act in front of a worldwide audience of millions and I can't wait to see what he does in such a grown up role.

2. The Cabin in the Woods

Drew Goddard is dreamy. If you are not a huge Buffy and/or Angel fan, you probably don't know who Drew Goddard is, but I do. And he's dreamy. You know, for a writer. Joss Whedon is dreamy, too, though possibly in a way that is different from Drew Goddard. Regardless, these two dreamy men – the most conventionally dreamy of which also wrote the intriguing and entertaining Cloverfield – have made a potentially hilariously frightening movie that has been tied up in MGM’s bankruptcy woes for nearly two years now. Studio bankruptcy: scarier than any movie on this list.

3. Scream 4

I doubt it's going to be the best scary movie of 2011, but you've gotta give credit where credit's due: the nature of the Scream movies introduced the horror/slasher genre to a generation of movie fans who might never have known what they were missing otherwise. It has never taken itself too seriously, and though the third installment was somewhat lackluster, there's hope that Kevin Williamson, Wes Craven and co. have really gotten the fourth one right.

4. Priest

Here's the pitch: Paul Bettany is a priest who uses weaponized holy symbols to kick gross demon ass. There are no brooding, misunderstood vampires to be found, and his is a holy crusade. Also, it's in 3D. Finally, a vampire movie the Vatican can really get behind.

5. Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

Maybe I'm just a contrary person at heart, but when you call a movie Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, that just makes me think it's totally going to make me Be Afraid of the Dark. Guillermo del Toro had a hand in writing this, which makes me even more certain. But it also guarantees that I'll welcome the night terrors that are to follow, because it'll be totally worth it.

6. Fright Night

Personally, I don't find Colin Farrell all that scary. Hot, yes, scary, no. Vampire? Finally an explanation that makes sense. Many people find a remake of Fright Night to be sacrilegious, but I try to avoid throwing stones until they will do the most damage, which is after the movie is actually out.

7. Red State

Kevin Smith wrote a horror movie. That sentence is uttered many ways. Kevin Smith wrote a horror movie? Kevin Smith wrote a horror movie!!!! Silent Bob made a horror movie? Duuuude. However you say it, Red State sounds like a love it or hate it proposition, not unlike most of Smith's films. (For the record, I fall firmly on the 'love it' side.) Love it or hate it, however, you've gotta give mad respect to the man for how he's marketing it: no studio. No high priced advertising team. He's doing this bitch old school, taking it on the road and disturbing people in a personal level. Rock on, Mr. Smith.

8. 11-11-11

I don't think any of it's really true, but the idea of certain pre-destined events occurring on certain pre-destined dates creeps me the hell out. Unfortunately, most of the time, the concept is better than the execution (see: the disaster movie 2012). I've got a good feeling about this one, though. Instead of dire disaster predictions, 11-11 is, in some circles, believed to be more of a consciousness awakening, where both angels and demons that surround us are finally able to open the lines of communication. Or something.

9. Apollo 18

Even the movie poster kind of freaks me out. The title makes it seem like it should be a sequel to Apollo 13 – the earnest drama Ron Howard made with Tom Hanks – but it's not. Like, really, really not. Houston, we have an alien and it's going to kill us all.

10. The Apparition

Show me a movie where a college experiment goes right, and I'll show you a college student who totally cheated on his experiment. This is another instance of supernatural forces gone wrong, but it stars Tom "Draco Malfoy" Felton, and Ashley "Alice Cullen" Greene, so it'll be worth the price of admission on some level, at least.
